Fuller sues US X Factor producers

Music mogul Simon Fuller has sued the US TV network Fox, seeking a credit and fees for the forthcoming US version of The X Factor.

He claims the News Corp broadcasting company, and producers FremantleMedia North America breached a 2005 contract.

Fuller, who created American Idol, claims he was promised an executive producer credit on the rival show.

Fox and Fremantle insist Fuller "has not been hired, nor performed any duties" on the programme.

The spokesperson for both companies added: "We believe this lawsuit is without merit and we expect to prevail."

Fox broadcasts both American Idol and the US version of The X-Factor, and FremantleMedia is producing both shows.

'Copyright infringement'

Fuller's spokesman said the legal action was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, after the relevant parties were unable to settle the matter privately.

The case follows a dispute between Fuller and Simon Cowell in 2004 over similarities between Fuller's American Idol talent show and Cowell's UK show, The X Factor.

Fuller sued Cowell for copyright infringement, over claims The X Factor copied the format of Fuller's show, Pop Idol - the original forerunner to American Idol.

Fuller claims the case was settled in 2005, after it was agreed that X-Factor would not air in the United States until 2011, that Cowell would remain a judge on American Idol for five more seasons, and that Fuller would be granted an executive producer credit on Cowell's show if it ever aired in the United States.

"Despite the clear agreement to grant Fuller an executive producer credit and to pay him an executive producer fee, defendants have refused to honour their obligations and have further refused to negotiate in good faith," Fuller's current legal action states.

The X Factor premieres in the US on 21 September, and marks the return of former American Idol judges Cowell and Paula Abdul, who left as judges on the talent show in 2010.

Horrible Bosses is a dark comedy that is funny enough to be a hit, but criminally fails to make the most of a strong premise and capable cast.

Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day play three friends who all have bosses they?d like to see dead.

So they try to murder them.It?s the three bosses who provide virtually all the laughs.

Colin Farrell is entertainingly vicious as a sleazy, irresponsible cokehead who takes over a chemical company when his father (Donald Sutherland) keels over with a heart attack.

Farrell?s plan is to trim down the organisation?.?.?.by firing all the fat people.

Jennifer Aniston has fun playing against her good-girl image, but never convinces as a nymphomaniac dentist who has her way with unconscious patients and can?t wait to seduce Day, her soon-to-be-married dental assistant.

Kevin Spacey is, at first, the most enjoyably evil of the three as Bateman?s boss, playing a variation on the silky sadist he portrayed in Swimming With Sharks. But then the script squanders his talents by making him go too crazy to be even slightly believable.

Sadly, screenwriters John Francis Daley, Jonathan M. Goldstein and Michael Markowitz are not clever enough to take the plot in plausible or hilarious directions.

The three employees? attempts to recruit hit-men (first Ioan Gruffudd, then Jamie Foxx) are preposterous.

Two of the three leads are fatally unappealing.

Sudeikis is repellent as a guy who thinks he?s God?s� gift to women. Day?s dental assistant is such a nerdy nincompoop you wonder why on Earth Aniston?s dentist would put her career in jeopardy for him.

The skilled comedian Bateman has the best moments, underplaying when all about him are going over the top.

Elsewhere, however, director Seth Gordon (who demonstrated with Four Christmases how terrible he is at pace, style and structure) goes for way too much clumsy slapstick, when something more grounded in reality and social satire might have been funnier.

One by-product of a recession is that it traps people in jobs they don?t like under bosses they can?t stand, so the idea behind the comedy should have been timely and cathartic.

But here the script constantly sacrifices wit, heart and plausibility in pursuit of cheap laughs and� filthy banter.

Cat Deeley shines at LA film premiere

The Brummie TV presenter, who hosts So You Think You Can Dance in the US, flew the British flag in her sultry ensemble at the Los Angeles premiere of Commerce.

Cat, 34, showed off her trim pins in a short embellished frock, which she teamed up with dark brown heels and a gold clutch bag.

She later showed how far she has come since her days on SMTV Live by rubbing shoulders with the likes of Diane Kruger and Emma Roberts at a Miu Miu bash in Beverly Hills.

Last week she said she felt "overwhelmed" after getting her first Emmy nomination for her presenting work on the dance show.

She gushed: "For me to come to America, to have won an Emmy nomination, to be the only girl in the category is absolutely amazing."

Radio 1 boss to leave station

BBC Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt is to leave his current role after 13 years, it has been announced.

Parfitt, who also oversees BBC 1Xtra and the Asian Network, will leave at the end of July to pursue new opportunities.

The BBC said that Parfitt, who has been in the job since 1998, had helped bring record audiences to Radio 1 and 1Xtra.

His 13 years in the role make him the longest-serving controller Radio 1 has had since its launch in 1967.

"I am immensely proud to have held this position and I leave with all three stations in great shape, with their listening figures at record highs and following a great BBC-wide Glastonbury event," Parfitt said.

"I'm most proud of the incredible teams I'm leaving behind - a group of talented, hard-working, creative and inspirational people who are a credit to the BBC."

'Supportive'

Zane Lowe paid tribute to his boss saying he "literally changed my life", and breakfast show presenter Chris Moyles called him "incredibly supportive".

Parfitt is seen as a strong supporter of Moyles, and has frequently defended him in the face of criticism.

Earlier this month it was announced that Moyles' contract had been extended until 2014.

Last year he spoke out in defence of the DJ, who criticised his employers on air because he had not been paid in two months.

At the time the controller said: "For me, it was a question of deciding whether he had overstepped the red lines or not. In my judgement, he hadn't."

In 2003 Parfitt introduced Radio 1's Big Weekend and oversaw the launch of BBC Radio 1Xtra.

However, in April BBC Trustee David Liddiment criticised Radio 1, saying it had failed to reduce the average age of its listeners, two years after the BBC Trust put forward its review.

Speaking at the Voice of the Listener and Viewer conference, Mr Liddiment acknowledged the station had "made a number of changes to the schedule and line-up", but their target demographic had still not been reached.

In June a report commissioned by the BBC's director of audio and music, Tim Davie, suggested that management at Radio 1 needed to be streamlined.

The report said the two stations should examine operating under a "single-tier management structure" within a single building and remove "all mirrored departments".

Katy Perry leads MTV nominations

US pop star Katy Perry leads the way at this year's MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) with nine nominations.

The singer's nods include video of the year for Firework, best pop video and best special effects.

British singer Adele and Kanye West picked up seven nominations apiece. Other multiple nominees included Lady Gaga, Beyonce, and Bruno Mars.

The VMAs are scheduled to take place on 28 August in Los Angeles and will be broadcast live in the US.

Perry, who married comedian Russell Brand last year, was also nominated for best female video, best collaboration, best art direction and best cinematography.

"I have nine nominations. I thought that was a typo or something," the star told MTV.

She will take on Perry, Adele, Beyonce and Nicki Minaj in the best female video award.

Last year the Bad Romance singer dominated the awards ceremony, taking home eight prizes.

Mars and West will do battle in the best male video category, alongside Justin Bieber, Cee-Lo Green and Eminem.

And Perry, Adele and Mars will take on Britney Spears and Pitbull in the battle for best pop video.
