Painter Lucian Freud dies aged 88

David Sillito looks back at artist Lucian Freud's famous works

Realist painter Lucian Freud, one of Britain's most distinguished and highly regarded artists, has died aged 88.

New York dealer William Acquavella said Freud had died at his London home on Wednesday after an unspecified illness.

Freud, a grandson of the psycho-analyst Sigmund Freud, was born in Berlin in 1922 and fled to Britain with his Jewish family in 1933, when he was 10.

Freud - particularly known for his paintings of nudes - became a British citizen in 1939.

His works have been increasingly sought after at recent auctions and his portrayal of an overweight nude woman sleeping on a couch sold in 2008 for $33.6m (20.6m) - a world record for a work by a living artist.

'Lived to paint'

Mr Acquavella described Freud "as one of the great painters of the 20th Century".

"In company he was exciting, humble, warm and witty. He lived to paint and painted until the day he died, far removed from the noise of the art world."

Nicholas Serota, director of the Tate gallery, said: "The vitality of [Freud's] nudes, the intensity of the still life paintings and the presence of his portraits of family and friends guarantee Lucian Freud a unique place in the pantheon of late 20th Century art.

"His early paintings redefined British art and his later works stand comparison with the great figurative painters of any period."

Former Observer art critic William Feaver, who knew Freud for more than 40 years, said Freud was someone who had "restored portraiture to its proper place", by focusing on all types of people, not just successful businessmen and their wives.

Lucian Freud muse Sue Tilley talks to BBC Breakfast about her experiences with the artist

"He said everything he did was autobiographical and a self portrait. He was a witty, impulsive artist but generous with it."

Mr Feaver said Freud had left several unfinished paintings.

He said: "He always liked to keep a couple of paintings on the go in case he dropped off the twig and I know he's done that."

Former muse Sue Tilley, who sat for the nude Benefits Supervisor Sleeping, said she had "fantastic experiences" while posing for the portrait.

"I found out last night on Twitter, bizarrely, and I did start crying," she told BBC Breakfast.

"I haven't seen him for a long time and he's not really a close friend now but it's a part of my life that's kind of gone."

Order of Merit

Freud, the son of an architect and older brother of the late broadcaster Clement Freud, went to the Central School of Art, in London and then to the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing and London's Goldsmiths College.

At first he confined himself to drawing, but when he was 17 had a self-portrait accepted for reproduction in the magazine, Horizon.

Freud was recognised early on and after a spell in the Merchant Navy in 1942, had his first one-man show in 1944, when he was 21.

After the war he went to France and Greece, and having taken up painting by then, returned to the UK in 1948 to teach for 10 years at the Slade School of Art.

Freud was married twice, first to sculptor Jacob Epstein's daughter, Kitty, the subject of his celebrated Girl With a White Dog. His second wife was the daughter of the Marquess of Dufferin and Ava.

Freud's other key works include Naked Girl Asleep and Reflection (self portrait). The Queen and supermodel Kate Moss are among those to have sat for the artist.

Marcus Mumford praises golf course in New Malden, Surrey

And now it seems Mumford & Sons are doing their bit to promote the game.

They've announced their local 18-hole course in New Malden, south west London, is one of their favourite places in the world.

Marcus Mumford wrote on his blog: "If you like golf, and you're in SW London, try to play here. Such lovely people without any of the exclusive, elitist bulls*** that comes with playing golf.

"Robert, in the pro shop, is a particularly lovely fella."

The posh group's jolly nice fans have now made the club their number one destination.

That's alongside a couple of free-range farm shops in the West Country that the fellas have also raved about.

A spokesman for Malden Golf Club said: "They obviously must have visited us without making a fuss because they didn't have any publicity when they came here.

"It is a very big compliment on behalf of both the staff and the members."

That will be their free golf membership sorted then.

Sara Cox apologies over 'daft' Twitter rant after offending deaf community

Angry reaction: Sara Cox said use of subtitles was 'daft'

BBC radio DJ Sara Cox has upset the deaf after complaining about having to sit through a subtitled film at the cinema.

The Radio 1 presenter provoked anger by saying on her Twitter page that the use of the subtitles, which were in English, was ?daft?.

But Miss Cox, best-known for promoting the ?ladette? culture among young women in the 1990s, was forced to apologise after her comments were described as ?shocking? and ?disgusting?.

A film executive said English-language subtitles are fast becoming ?standard practice? in cinemas to help customers who have hearing problems. Many advertise their use in local listings, but some filmgoers are entering cinemas unaware that the facility is being used.

It was at a showing of the Hollywood comedy Bridesmaids at her local cinema that 36-year-old Miss Cox, who lives in North London, made her controversial comments.

Using her mobile phone, she wrote on her Twitter page: ?How daft is this? I?m on a date at the flicks and Bridesmaids is gonna have English subtitles.?

She then added: ?I morphed momentarily into my dad and asked if we got any money off cos of the subtitles.

?If I was wearing my specs I could have just put a thin strip of black gaffer tape across the bottom of the lenses to block out the subtitles.?

A number of her followers on Twitter immediately began joking based on her comments.

Miss Cox initially defended herself from those who said she should have checked the listings before going to the cinema, saying: ?We checked online & it didn?t mention it.?

One of her followers then wrote: ?Get some respect and realise how lucky you are to HEAR!?

Apologetic: The DJ apologised for the comments and deleted the posts from her page. Seen here at the F1 party earlier this monthApologetic: The DJ apologised for the comments and deleted the posts from her page. Seen here at the F1 party earlier this month

And another wrote: ?More shocking was her followers? ignorant response and jokes, jumping on her bandwagon, some mocking and making fun. We?re not second-rate citizens.?

Fellow tweeter Matthew Shaw said: ?You?ve royally p***** off hundreds of deaf people.?

Following the outcry, she then deleted the offending comments before delivering an apology to her 285,000 followers on the social networking site.

In hot water: Sara Cox has apologised after complaining to Twitter that she had to sit through a film with subtitles, sparking outrage form the deaf communityIn hot water: Sara Cox has apologised after complaining to Twitter that she had to sit through a film with subtitles, sparking outrage form the deaf community

She wrote: ?Crikey, come out of cinema to lots of severe tellings off from very cross people. Sorry my random musings might sometimes not be thought thru.?

It is not the first time she has attracted controversy. As well as helping to kickstart the rise of the ladette culture, alongside her friend Zoe Ball, in the 1990s, in August 2000 she said during a live Radio 1 broadcast that the Queen Mother ?smelt of wee?. Despite her remark she managed to escape being sacked by the BBC.

Emma Harrison, of Action on Hearing Loss, said: ?Many of the ten million people with hearing loss in the UK rely on subtitles to follow films and this provision is vital in making the cinema experience accessible to everyone.?

Mark Batey, chief executive of the Film Distribution Association, said that older films traditionally shown on 35mm reels required the subtitles to be ?burnt? on to the celluloid, a laborious and expensive procedure. He added: ?Now that most cinemas use digital technology to screen movies, it is far easier to add subtitles. Film distribution companies now provide the subtitles as normal practice. Then, it is up to the individual cinemas whether they want to add the subtitles or not, depending on local audience demand.?

He said that some cinemas are located in areas with a large population of people who have hearing impairments, while they may also decide to show a subtitled film at certain times of the day and not at others.

Fuller sues US X Factor producers

Music mogul Simon Fuller has sued the US TV network Fox, seeking a credit and fees for the forthcoming US version of The X Factor.

He claims the News Corp broadcasting company, and producers FremantleMedia North America breached a 2005 contract.

Fuller, who created American Idol, claims he was promised an executive producer credit on the rival show.

Fox and Fremantle insist Fuller "has not been hired, nor performed any duties" on the programme.

The spokesperson for both companies added: "We believe this lawsuit is without merit and we expect to prevail."

Fox broadcasts both American Idol and the US version of The X-Factor, and FremantleMedia is producing both shows.

'Copyright infringement'

Fuller's spokesman said the legal action was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, after the relevant parties were unable to settle the matter privately.

The case follows a dispute between Fuller and Simon Cowell in 2004 over similarities between Fuller's American Idol talent show and Cowell's UK show, The X Factor.

Fuller sued Cowell for copyright infringement, over claims The X Factor copied the format of Fuller's show, Pop Idol - the original forerunner to American Idol.

Fuller claims the case was settled in 2005, after it was agreed that X-Factor would not air in the United States until 2011, that Cowell would remain a judge on American Idol for five more seasons, and that Fuller would be granted an executive producer credit on Cowell's show if it ever aired in the United States.

"Despite the clear agreement to grant Fuller an executive producer credit and to pay him an executive producer fee, defendants have refused to honour their obligations and have further refused to negotiate in good faith," Fuller's current legal action states.

The X Factor premieres in the US on 21 September, and marks the return of former American Idol judges Cowell and Paula Abdul, who left as judges on the talent show in 2010.

Horrible bosses review: Jennifer Aniston looks good but doesn't get the most laughs

By Chris Tookey

Last updated at 9:16 AM on 22nd July 2011

Horrible Bosses(15)

Verdict: Manages some laughs

Rating: 3 Star Rating

Horrible Bosses is a dark comedy that is funny enough to be a hit, but criminally fails to make the most of a strong premise and capable cast.

Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day play three friends who all have bosses they?d like to see dead.

So they try to murder them. It?s the three bosses who provide virtually all the laughs.

Unconvincing: Jennifer Aniston fails to shake off her good-girl image in Horrible Bosses as a nymphomaniac dentist

Unconvincing: Jennifer Aniston fails to shake off her good-girl image in Horrible Bosses as a nymphomaniac dentist

Colin Farrell is entertainingly vicious as a sleazy, irresponsible cokehead who takes over a chemical company when his father (Donald Sutherland) keels over with a heart attack.

Farrell?s plan is to trim down the organisation?.?.?.by firing all the fat people.

Jennifer Aniston has fun playing against her good-girl image, but never convinces as a nymphomaniac dentist who has her way with unconscious patients and can?t wait to seduce Day, her soon-to-be-married dental assistant.

Kevin Spacey is, at first, the most enjoyably evil of the three as Bateman?s boss, playing a variation on the silky sadist he portrayed in Swimming With Sharks. But then the script squanders his talents by making him go too crazy to be even slightly believable.

Sadly, screenwriters John Francis Daley, Jonathan M. Goldstein and Michael Markowitz are not clever enough to take the plot in plausible or hilarious directions.

Cheap laughs: Although Jennifer Aniston may steal the show looks wise, her character in Horrible Bosses doesn't get the most laughs

Cheap laughs: Although Jennifer Aniston may steal the show looks wise, her character in Horrible Bosses doesn't get the most laughs

The three employees? attempts to recruit hit-men (first Ioan Gruffudd, then Jamie Foxx) are preposterous.

Two of the three leads are fatally unappealing.

Sudeikis is repellent as a guy who thinks he?s God?s gift to women. Day?s dental assistant is such a nerdy nincompoop you wonder why on Earth Aniston?s dentist would put her career in jeopardy for him.

The skilled comedian Bateman has the best moments, underplaying when all about him are going over the top.

Elsewhere, however, director Seth Gordon (who demonstrated with Four Christmases how terrible he is at pace, style and structure) goes for way too much clumsy slapstick, when something more grounded in reality and social satire might have been funnier.

One by-product of a recession is that it traps people in jobs they don?t like under bosses they can?t stand, so the idea behind the comedy should have been timely and cathartic.

But here the script constantly sacrifices wit, heart and plausibility in pursuit of cheap laughs and filthy banter.

Cat Deeley shines at LA film premiere

The Brummie TV presenter, who hosts So You Think You Can Dance in the US, flew the British flag in her sultry ensemble at the Los Angeles premiere of Commerce.
