British actor lands Superman role

British actor Henry Cavill is to star as Superman in the next movie about the flying superhero.

Cavill is best known for his role as Charles Brandon in the BBC historical drama The Tudors.

He was once dubbed "the unluckiest man in Hollywood" by Empire magazine, after missing out on several roles including Batman and James Bond.

And Brandon Routh beat him to the Superman role in 2006 movie, Superman Returns.

He is the third British actor to be cast as a Hollywood superhero recently.

Cavill, who was born in Jersey, follows in the footsteps of Christian Bale as Batman and Andrew Garfield, who is the new Spider-Man.

The new Superman movie has no title or release date yet.

It will be directed by Zack Snyder, who said in a statement that Cavill was "the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield."

Sheen passion play to become film

A play directed by Michael Sheen to be performed on the streets, beaches and hills of Port Talbot at Easter is also to become a film.

The Hollywood actor is drafting in hundreds of locals for the Port Talbot Passion.

It is inspired by the the biblical Passion Play but none of the scenes are in a traditional theatre.

The Film Agency for Wales has awarded £125,000 from £425,000 to create a film out of the production.

Sheen, famous for playing role such as Tony Blair in the Queen and David Frost in Frost/Nixon, has been involved with the National Theatre Wales production for more than a year.

As well as acting as creative director, he will perform in the play staged at various locations from April 22 to 24.

Film Agency for Wales grants

  • £125,000 for Port Talbot Passion, a film of National Theatre Wales' production Passion, to be directed by Dave McKean and produced by Keith Griffiths.
  • £100,000 for Welsh based writer Philip Ralph and Swansea born director, Krishnendu Majumdar, for their feature film, Deepcut.
  • £150,000 for Welsh born writer/director Jon Jones' first theatrical, currently untitled feature film.
  • £50,000 to Hot Property Films for their screenplay Kelly and Victor.

It is the final and largest of 13 "moving productions" set in locations as diverse as an old library in Swansea and military range in the Brecon Beacons during the launch year of National Theatre Wales.

The film will be directed by Dave McKean who made Mirrormask with a theatrical release planned for later in the year.

Pauline Burt, chief executive of the Film Agency for Wales, said: "Port Talbot Passion promises to provide an international showcase for a truly innovative piece of work that will celebrate the town and people of Port Talbot, whilst brimming with Welsh talent both in front of and behind the camera.

"We are hugely excited to be working with a team that includes Michael Sheen and National Theatre Wales, who have consistently delivered quality and innovation."

Sheen spoke to BBC Wales when he was in Port Talbot launching the project last year.

He said it was inspired by the bi-annual performance of the Passion Play that he and his family attended in Margam Park when he was growing up in Port Talbot.

"It's not a revival of the Passion Play - it's inspired by the Passion Play - we are going to use the whole of Port Talbot as our performance base and get as many people involved as we can," he added.

"I feel like it's a real privilege and honour to be able to come to my home town, a town that has so much meaning to me and that I have had so much support from."

Cher?s rapid exit from Heathrow

Close to 500 fans were there to greet the X Factor rapper, who has been in LA.

Cops had to step in to make sure Cher was safe.

It's incredible to think so many people turned up. That's the kind of reception pop-granny CHER got in the Eighties.

The rapper was just as surprised to be grabbed by the police, from what I've heard.

Before The X Factor, being bundled into a police car was the sign of a decent Saturday night.

'I thought he was on a suicide binge': Porn star claims Charlie Sheen smoked cocaine every few minutes on wild bender

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 5:58 PM on 31st January 2011

A porn star who partied with Charlie Sheen before he was rushed to hospital said the star was on a mission to kill himself.

Kacey Jordan, 22, said she was stunned by the Two And A Half Men actor's behaviour during a 36-hour bender last week.

Speaking to US TV show Good Morning America, blonde Kacey said she saw the star smoke from a tennis ball-sized pile of cocaine 'every two to five minutes'.

She said: 'I've never seen someone so self-destructive. I thought maybe it was almost like a suicide binge.'

Party guest: Porn star Kacey Jordan recounted her wild night with Charlie Sheen on on Good Morning America today

Party guest: Porn star Kacey Jordan recounted her wild night with Charlie Sheen on on Good Morning America today

She said she was offered $5,000 to attend a party at his Los Angeles mansion and immeditely noticed his dishevelled state when she arrived.

She recalled: 'He asked: "Where's the drugs?"

To which a fellow party guest replied, '"We ran out, don't you remember?'"

She said he ordered more drugs for the party.

'A guy eventually shows up and he opens his bag and dumps open a - I would say - about a tennis ball size, of cocaine on the table,' she added.

'It was all over the back of the counter, [Sheen] was chiselling it off, putting it in there [his pipe], hitting it every two to five minutes.

Drug binge: Jordan says the actor was smoking cocaine with a pipe 'every two to five minutes'

Drug binge: Jordan says the actor was smoking cocaine with a pipe 'every two to five minutes'

'All I hear was "Light, light, light' all night."

And she said things took an even more bizarre turn when Sheen concocted a plan for the porn stars to move into a rented mansion so he could party every night.

She said: 'He wanted us all to live in this huge house that he was going to rent out. He said we could have anything we wanted.

'He said, "We're going to party, we're going to have fun". He just wants to retire, he just wants to have fun. He's like, "I'm done, I'm done."'

And he even said the porn stars could babysit his two daughters with ex-wife Denise Richards, 39 - Sam, six and Lola, five.

Pay day: Kacey claims she was offered $5,000 to attend Sheen's party last week

Kacey told the TV show: 'I think maybe the babysitting part was important to him so that maybe when he was doing his drinking, maybe he didn't have to see his kids be like that and have one of us girls watch him.'

But she said she was troubled by the idea.

'The kids was what bothered me,' she added.

Sheen has since checked into rehab, where he is expected to stay for three months.

Jordan has also told how she had 'quick sex' with the Two And A Half Men star, who earns a reported £1.25million for each episode of his hit TV sitcom.

A representative for Sheen said: 'Charlie is currently seeking the medical attention he needs. It is a shame that... opportunistic women are trying to take advantage of his celebrity status.'

Bender: According to claims, the actor was on a bender that involved porn stars and '$20,000 worth of cocaine'

Bender: The actor is understood to have partied for 36 hours at his Los Angeles home before being hospitalised

Jordan was given a $30,000 cheque by the actor when she left his house, just hours before he ended up being rushed to hospital with stomach pains.

It comes amid reports in the US that Sheen spent a staggering half-a-million dollars on escorts and drugs in the past six months.

RadarOnline reports that he 'consumed mountains of cocaine and other drugs as he partied uncontrollably.'

'He spent a fortune... his preference is to smoke the cocaine,' a close friend told the celebrity website.

The friend added: 'Charlie's nightly habit would be tens of thousands of dollars of drugs and two girls.

'He would typically pay them $5,000 to $10,000 for the night and would give them cash, check or money transfer. He even bought two girls cars.'

Bond composer Barry dies aged 77

Composer John Barry, famous for his work on Born Free, Out of Africa and the James Bond films, has died in New York of a heart attack aged 77.

Born John Barry Prendergast in 1933, the York-born musician first found fame as leader of the John Barry Seven.

His arrangement of Monty Norman's James Bond theme led to him composing scores for 11 films in the series, among them Goldfinger and You Only Live Twice.

His work saw him win five Oscars, while he received a Bafta fellowship in 2005.

His most recent film score featured in the 2001 war thriller Enigma, while a musical version of Brighton Rock, created with lyricist Don Black, had its London premiere in 2004.

Black, who worked with the composer on his Born Free, Thunderball and Diamonds are Forever theme songs, said Barry remained unaffected by his international success.

"The thing about John that I will always remember was he never changed," he said.

"He was very much the Yorkshireman, whether he was in Beverly Hills or Manhattan."

Sir Tim Rice - who worked with Barry on All Time High, the song heard over the title sequence of 1983 Bond movie Octopussy - also cited the composer's roots, remembering the "slight Yorkshire tinge to his voice which he never lost".

"Film seemed to bring out the very best in him," he said of a man who "was able to catch the mood of a scene or a whole film by the genius of orchestration with fairly conventional instruments".

Awarded an OBE in 1999 for his services to music, Barry was renowned for his lush strings, orchestral swells and elegant melodies.

His work found a new audience when Robbie Williams featured music from You Only Live Twice on his 1998 hit single Millennium.

Current Bond film composer David Arnold paid tribute to his predecessor via Twitter.

"I am profoundly saddened by the news but profoundly thankful for everything he did for music and for me personally," he said.

Barry's son-in-law, BBC business reporter Simon Jack, said he "truly loved writing music as much as people enjoyed listening to it".

"He saw himself as much a dramatist as a composer and his music was inextricably linked to the stories told on the screen."

Jack also remembered him as "a wickedly funny man" whose "passion, genius and sense of humour will be terribly missed by his family and friends".

Speaking on BBC Breakfast, Born Free star Virginia McKenna said Barry was "a wonderful musician and composer".

Close friend Michael Crawford, meanwhile, said he had written "some of the most memorable and beautiful film scores we could ever wish to hear".

Barry's first Oscars came in 1967 for his Born Free score and its iconic title theme.

More Academy Awards followed for the soundtracks he wrote for The Lion in Winter, Out of Africa and Dances with Wolves.

Barry also won four Grammys, a Bafta for The Lion in Winter and a Golden Globe for Out of Africa.

His work for TV included the themes for Juke Box Jury and The Persuaders, while his non-soundtrack work included the albums Eternal Echoes and The Beyondness of Things.

In 2002 he was named an Honorary Freeman of the City of York, an honour he received at a venue in the city where he once used to play trumpet in the 1950s.

Barry, who lived in Oyster Bay, Long Island, is survived by Laurie, his wife of 33 years, his four children and five grandchildren.

His family said funeral arrangements would be private and that a memorial service would be held in the UK later this year.

But she struggled to negotiate the red carpet in her towering black heels and nearly took a tumble at one point after getting her dress caught in the heel of her shoe.

A shade of blue: American TV host Nancy O'Dell, and actress Cara Buono and Glee's Dianna Agron donned intricate designs

Screen Actors Guild awards 2011: Colin Firth and The King's Speech scoop top honours

BY BAZ BAMIGBOYE and ELLIE GENOWER
Last updated at 10:28 AM on 31st January 2011

  • Colin Firth one step closer to an Oscar as he scoops Outstanding Actor award
  • Natalie Portman adds to her haul as she wins Outstanding Actress for Black Swan
  • Glee comes away empty handed despite three nominations

The King's Speech beat out stiff competition to win top film honours at tonight's Screen Actor's Guild award, with Colin Firth scooping the Outstanding Actor honour.

The film won the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, beating favourites The Social Network and The Fighter.

Its win leaves the race wide open for this year's Oscar ceremony, with many tipping the Best Picture category to be the closest in years.

In his speech, Firth paid tribute to his 'dream cast,' who included Geoffrey Rush as speech therapist Lionel Logue, Anthony Andrews as Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin and Helena Bonham Carter as the Queen Mother.

'This is really something,' he said.

Geoffrey Rush spoke for the rest of the cast as they all walked up on stage to accept their award.

'It shouldn't be called the SAG Award, it should be called the uplifting award,' he said.

The win caps a sensational week that has seen The King's Speech win trophies from the Producers Guild of America and the Directors Guild of America.

Both are seen as powerful nods as to which stars and what film will collect the top awards on Oscar night.

For several weeks the Oscar front-runner was the Facebook film The Social Network which had been winning prizes on what seemed like a daily basis, including the best film from the Golden Globes.

But over the past couple of weekends, The King's Speech halted The Social Network's advance when its producers took the PGA award.

And on Saturday The King's Speech director Tom Hooper surprised Hollywood by winning the DGA main award for best director.

It is a highly significant indicator as to who will at the Oscars next month as the acting branch represents the largest voting block in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organisation behind the Oscars.

Soprano Margaret Price dies, 69

Dame Margaret Price, who was considered one of the world's leading sopranos, has died at the age of 69.

She passed away from heart failure on Friday morning at her home near Cardigan, Ceredigion.

Dame Margaret had performed in venues all over the world.

Born into a musical family in Blackwood, Monmouthshire, she was encouraged to sing by her family, although her father was against a career in music.

In her youth she rarely competed at Eisteddfodau - Welsh cultural festivals in which singing plays a major role - and dreamt of becoming a biology teacher.

But on her music teacher's recommendation she went to London to sing for conductor Charles Kennedy Scott.

A scholarship to study with him at the Trinity College of Music followed when she was just 15.

She made her acclaimed operatic debut with Welsh National Opera as Cherubino in Mozart's Marriage Of Figaro in 1962 before becoming famous overnight when she stood in for Teresa Beganza at the Royal Opera House.

At this point, she was still singing mezzo, but her voice was developed into a soprano and within a few years she was in huge demand.

Her career saw her performing in venues like the Royal Opera House in London, New York, Vienna, Paris and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich.

She was described as having "one of the most beautiful, luminous voices ever to grace the opera and concert stages," and having "legendary status with her singing of some of the most difficult and elusive music in the repertoire - that of Mozart - using a winning combination of purity and beauty of tone and a flawless technique".

She returned to Wales to perform many times, including recordings of Mozart's C Minor Mass and Beethoven's Missa Solemnis for BBC Wales TV in the 1980s.

She was awarded the CBE in 1982 followed by the DBE in 1993.

The Munich Opera honoured her with the title Bayerische Kammersangerin.

Geri Halliwell reveals why she swapped girl power for an alpha male

By LIZ JONES

Last updated at 1:31 AM on 30th January 2011

After years struggling with the way she looks, former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell is at last happy in her own skin – flaunting her curves in her new high-street swimwear collection. Here she talks to Liz Jones about body image, mellow motherhood, the rich legacy (and A-list fans) of the Spice Girls – and finding love

Geri Halliwell

'I met Henry on a beach. I was in a bikini. Swimwear! It does work,' says Geri

I've seen remarkably few celebrities naked. But I have seen Geri Halliwell in just her knickers. It was ten years ago, we were on a magazine cover shoot in Los Angeles, and Geri was trying to decide what to put on. I remember she was as small as a ten-year-old. This was during Geri’s super-aerobicised, super-Ashtanga-yogafied period. She had requested only vegetables and brown rice on the shoot. She seemed tense, lonely and, despite the nakedness, terribly unhappy in her own skin.

What a difference a decade makes. I meet Geri again in her lovely home in Highgate, North London. I’m not supposed to tell you about her house, but I can’t resist revealing that it’s all warm wood, huge sofas and perfect roses, everywhere. She is in a long sweater and over-the-knee socks, hair still wet from the shower. Not much make-up, apart from a slick of mascara. ‘I remember that shoot,’ she says, tucking her legs under her on the sofa. ‘I wore minimal make-up and my own T-shirt. And I remember the superstar photographer just sat there snoozing while all his minions set up the shot, then he just pressed a button!’

I ask how the past ten years have treated her. She’s now 38, and has become a mum, for starters. Her daughter Bluebell is four and a half. She laughs.

‘My daughter is the biggest gift; I’ve said it so many times and it sounds like a cliché, but the thing about being a parent is when you think you’ve cracked it, and you’re on top of your game, they change again and you have to catch up and adjust. I feel such a responsibility to instil good values in her, to be polite, to have discipline.’

The biggest transformation is that Geri now seems happy with how she looks. She has just designed a range of swimwear for Next, and modelled the collection for the catalogue. She spreads the bikinis and proofs of the photos on her huge wooden coffee table. ‘I always find it hard to find a bikini that fits me, because I have quite big breasts. There’s intelligence in the structure – there’s an architect involved in making your boobs look good, does that make sense? And the prices are reasonable, too: £38 for a bikini.’

From left: In 'that dress' at the Brits in 1997; with Henry at last year's Brit Awards, and introducing her daughter Bluebell to one of her own children’s books

She says that because her weight has always been up and down – ‘I’ve had small boobs, big boobs, curvy bum, skinny bum’ – she knows what works for different body shapes.

‘I’ve got one of those bodies that fluctuates, so I’ve had to really think about the construction. You know when you feel you’ve got a bit of a tummy? On holiday you want to eat well, have that freedom. This range is cut to flatter your body.’ She says she has been very hands-on in the design process, and I tell her that every celebrity always says that. ‘I always loved fashion but I’ve never been a slave to it. I’ve always collected swatches of fabric I like, so I was able to show them exactly what I wanted. Even in the Spice Girls, I would always have input into the costumes. That dress I wore for the Brits was my idea: someone sent me a black Gucci dress so I sewed on a Union Jack tea towel to liven it up a bit.’ Why hasn’t she designed a collection before now? ‘The funny thing is, I was a shop assistant in Next, a Saturday girl. The collaboration just feels right.’

I ask if she went on a diet and exercise binge before the catalogue shoot. She suffered from bulimia when she was younger, and was addicted to exercise. ‘Coming up to it, my natural instinct would have been to sort my body out, embark on a mad regime. But I don’t have time because I’m a mother; all I did was walk Bluebell to school. The thing is, when I feel like I have to lose weight, the opposite happens. I remember stuffing loads of chocolate on the plane to the shoot, and I thought, “Why don’t you have the courage to show up in a body that’s natural, not overly worked out?”’

She tells me the people at Next offered to airbrush the photos. ‘I said, “Don’t airbrush them. I don’t mind a little help but don’t make my body look what it isn’t.” If you go online – this is groundbreaking for where my head is – there’s a mini film of the Next shoot, and I looked at it once and someone with me said, “Do you mind that bit, that imperfection?” and I said, “No, leave it.”

‘I don’t know if that’s a first, but it’s definitely got better. If you’d asked me ten years ago, I would have been so controlling about how I looked. I feel you have to come to a point where you have to let go, and that’s freeing.’

What a turn-up that Geri, who was once such a slave to perfection – remember that photograph of her on an LA beach, performing a headstand? – has designed a collection that is all about allowing women to feel better about themselves. ‘I thought, “Why not start with something that really helps a woman feel good in the most vulnerable place, on the beach on holiday?”’

Was she worried she might pass on her neuroses to her daughter? ‘I obviously want to give a healthy body image to my own daughter. I think having good examples, eating properly, that’s all one can do – and just be really loving around her. I’ve tried to give her confidence in who she is.’ She laughs. ‘I think she’s all right in the confidence department.’

How did Geri overcome her own problems around food and body image? ‘It comes with time and maturity. There is so much more in the world to be thinking about than the way I look. I just wanted to be free of it. Some days are better than others. The power of food is amazing, making someone go “Mmm”. I love cooking a roast with lovely gravy and enjoying it myself. I’m a nicer person to be around, rather than being too controlling. Who wants to be around that? Being forgiving about my own imperfections, allowing messiness.’

‘I’m more forgiving these days about my own imperfections’

You’re not messy, I say, looking at the immaculate house, the tidy terrace, devoid of the litter of toys. She laughs. ‘The desire for perfection is utterly miserable. I still have dreams, I still have goals, I’m still a little vain, but actually I’m just realising my humanness. Sometimes I’m a curvy, messy person who can say the wrong thing, sometimes fail.’

Perfectionists achieve, though. You’re a worker and an achiever. ‘A little bit of drive is good, but I work better when I’m cheerleading my way into doing something rather than being overly obsessed and saying to myself, “You’ve got to do it otherwise you’re rubbish.” It’s more about going, “Come on, you’re lovely regardless.”’

I tell her she looks the best she ever has. ‘Thank you, that’s very nice. I feel comfortable and OK. I’m much more appreciative of how I look and what I’ve been given. I’ve stopped trying to be something I’m not – accepting that this is my shape and I’ve got to make the best of it.’

The biggest difference, though, in the Geri now to the Geri of ten years ago is that she’s in a happy relationship. She gives me a huge beam when I mention his name: Henry Beckwith, the 32-year-old heir to a property empire and cousin of socialite Tamara. They’ve been together nearly two years. ‘My boyfriend flies a helicopter and that’s very nice. It’s really good because I used to have a big fear of flying but it’s actually helped me, watching him flying and he’s sitting next to me. I literally put my life in his hands.’

Where did they go on their first date? ‘Not in a helicopter. I met him on the beach, and I was in a bikini. Swimwear! It does work.’

It must have taken a degree of confidence, to walk up and ask a Spice Girl on a date. ‘He was bright red, but that’s because of his skin tone. He’s going to kill me for saying that! He didn’t actually chat me up, he sent his mate to try and do it. It was quite funny.’ Do they live together? ‘No.’ Are they going to get married, or have children (her recent visit to a church has sparked engagement rumours)? ‘Not at the moment.’ She catches the eye of her assistant. ‘No. No!’ They both laugh.

Geri says her drive, the ‘extra gas in the tank’, that has got her to where she is now came about because her father died when she was 21; she is still very close to her Spanish mother, Ana. ‘His death had a massive impact. I’d found a much more peaceful, loving, balanced relationship with my father and then he died. And at such a young age, it was a shocking realisation that people can love you and then leave you. And also my parents were divorced, so I felt very distrusting of relationships and depending on anybody so I tried to become very self-dependent, which is a bit lonely. And so I was never present or available for relationships, not even one with myself. I was just consistently working all the time, or looking for a father figure.

Is she allowing Henry to look after her?

‘To a degree. It’s part of being a Leo. I really try to allow the man to be the man. We are told as little girls that Prince Charming is going to save us and whisk us off to his palace and there is a part of me that thinks, “Oh, wouldn’t that be nice?” And then someone’s brandishing the words “girl power”, telling us we’ve got to be independent, strong females. I think I’m a bit of both, which is quite confusing.’

How is Henry coping? ‘It takes a hell of a strong man to be with someone like me. I think he has a strong enough sense of self, but what I love about him is that he loves me for me. He doesn’t buy into any of the image. He finds it amusing and fun, but he’s not intoxicated by it.’

A lesser man might be jealous that she gets all the attention. ‘No, he’s very supportive and very encouraging. He’s strong and very kind. He won’t let me push him around. He’s the first alpha male I’ve gone out with and that’s why it’s working. He makes it a little bit challenging sometimes, but I love it that he’s a strong man. I went out with a doormat and he resented me and I ended up resenting him, so I appreciate that Henry is a strong man.’

Is money an issue? ‘Regardless of their background, when you are with that other person, within four walls, that’s what matters. It’s about their character and quality. I have a lot in common with Henry: we’re both fun, active, sporty. I’m very playful, I’m like a tomboy in certain ways. But for me the most important thing is integrity, loyalty and spirit, the kindness of the person. The character of the man. Completely fundamental. They’ve got to be funny and you’ve got to fancy them, too.’

I wonder if she is still close to the other Spice Girls, if she still even thinks much about those days. ‘They’re like family members to me. It’s one of those things that I don’t see them all the time but when I do, it feels like yesterday and we go back to our original roles. It’s quite funny.’ They’ve all turned out pretty well. ‘None of us has shaved our heads and ended up in rehab.’

I wonder too why she bothers to do things like be a judge on The X Factor, or design and model clothes for Next. She has enough money to never work again. ‘I am naturally, authentically, a creative person. I love painting with my daughter – we have creative sessions! That’s just who I am. In the band, I’d be in the studio writing lyrics, Victoria would be out shopping for Prada shoes. She’s always loved high-end fashion. I’m incredibly proud of her.’ Will she make another record? ‘Maybe! I’m passionate about music and I’ll always be involved in the business – I’m managing a band that you’ll see at some point. It’s very exciting. I’m a mummy, I like to nurture…’

I remind her of the documentary she made as she left the Spice Girls. That shot of her sitting on the stairs of her mansion in the country, looking afraid and alone, apart from the presence of Harry, her shih-tzu. ‘God, yes, I remember that. No, I don’t have that house any more. It’s quite hard to be objective about that time, but I’m definitely in a different place to where I was. Actually, I think I feel in certain ways I’m doing full circle. I went to see Lady Gaga in concert, and we saw each other backstage and it was really nice because there wasn’t anybody else around, and she said, “You know, Geri, you really inspired me, I really tuned in to what you stood for.” I am that girl again, the girl I was at the beginning.’

Does she ever wish all this had never happened, the fame?

‘No, not at all. I completely appreciate that I’m in a very unique, privileged position. What a safari my life has been. I just think, wow! I feel very, very lucky.’

New health scare over Tate 'seeds'

The public were invited to walk over and handle the porcelain sunflower seeds

One of the most striking exhibitions at the Tate Modern for years is at the centre of a new health scare.

The BBC has learned that the installation of 100 million porcelain "sunflower seeds" was made in China using paint containing lead.

People were initially able to walk on and pick up the "seeds" but this was soon banned after concerns over the amount of ceramic dust created.

The Tate says the installation poses no health risk in its present form.

Safety checks

The work created by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei in the vast Turbine Hall for the Tate's annual Unilever Series was cordoned off from the public just days after opening in October because of the concerns about dust.

BBC arts editor Will Gompertz says the latest revelation will raise more questions about possible health risks, and whether the Tate carried out enough safety checks.

The Tate said in a statement: "The tests show that traces of lead are present in the material of the seeds and the dust that resulted from the interaction with the work by visitors.

"The results showed that exposure to the dust during the period when the work could still be walked on was below the relevant workplace exposure limits.

Like Crazy wins top Sundance gong

Like Crazy, a film about a long-distance relationship directed by Drake Doremus, has been awarded the grand jury prize at this year's Sundance Film Festival.

Felicity Jones, who starred in the movie, received the special jury prize for acting in the movie.

Peter D Richardson's film How To Die In Oregon won the grand jury US documentary prize.

Mike Cahill and Brit Marling's Another Earth was also recognised at the event.

The science-fiction film, about two strangers who are brought together the night before the discovery of a duplicate planet Earth, won a dramatic special jury prize and the Alfred P Sloan trophy.

Cahill, who directed and co-wrote the movie, said: "This is the greatest week of our lives."

'Extraordinary individuals'

Doremus paid tribute to his parents "for believing in love, and teaching me that love is important so I can make this movie one day".

He added: "This movie is about love, and love never dying, being with you for the rest of your life. Your first love will never leave you and mine didn't and is here with me tonight."

How To Die In Oregon explores the reality of euthanasia as it follows several terminally ill patients in their final months and days of their lives.

Its director Peter Richardson dedicated his prize to the "extraordinary individuals who allowed me to enter their life, document their life during the last four years. This award is for you and because of you."

Anne Sewitsky's Happy, Happy, was named the winner of the best foreign drama prize and the award for best foreign documentary went to Hell And Back Again.

Tim Blake Nelson, who appeared in the film Flypaper, which premiered at the festival, presented the awards ceremony in the ski resort of Park City.

"If you win a prize today, that's fantastic," he told the audience.

"But if you don't, persevere because if you have made it this far, trust me, your film will find a home."

It was the 30th anniversary of the festival, which was founded by actor Robert Redford to promote independent filmmaking.

Last year Winter's Bone won the top prize. It has since been nominated in four categories including best film for this year's Oscars.

Has Cheryl Cole blown it with her tattoos and return to Ashley Cole?

By Alison Boshoff
Last updated at 1:10 AM on 31st January 2011

Not herself? At the National Television Awards Cheryl did not seem like herself - was she bracing herself for some bad news?

Not herself? At the National Television Awards Cheryl did not seem like herself - was she bracing herself for some bad news?

People who saw her at the National Television Awards last week will tell you that there is something different about Cheryl Cole.

Not the immense and undeniably vulgar tattoo which sprawls across her lower back — that’s actually been around for months — but the slight air of embarrassment that hangs about her like a fug of that hairspray she’s paid to promote.

This is something of a first for Cheryl, whose rise to the status of nation’s sweetheart has, thus far, appeared unstoppable.

The Mail understands her hopes of a dream job on The X Factor USA are evaporating — an excruciating public rejection.

At the same time, her unlikely romance with dancer Derek Hough seems to have faltered. And her status as a style icon is under threat, with debate over the wisdom of her £900 tattoo raging on the internet.

Indeed, Cheryl may have thought 2010 was bad, but 2011 is already shaping up as yet another annus horribilis.

Most surprising of all is the suggestion her relationship with her ex-husband Ashley is being rekindled. Yesterday it was reported that she met him at their former marital home in Surrey last week. Could a reconciliation really be on the cards?

Well, her romance with Derek Hough appears to be in one of its ‘off’ phases. Sources say she has ‘cold feet’ and doesn’t want to move in with him in Los Angeles. Instead, she plans to rent a place of her own. Her reasoning seems to be that although at times she feels that she loves him dearly, deep down she isn’t ready to make the commitment.

Some of her associates feel that she has yet to move on fully from Ashley. Although they are divorced, they remain in touch. ‘There is a part of me that will always love him and love what we had,’ she told an interviewer.

For his part, Ashley Cole has for months now been texting and calling her, and continues to hope that they can still be friends — and perhaps even more than that.

Surely it would be professional suicide for Cheryl to get back with him, given that he humiliated her with a series of alleged infidelities? Yet she remains — rather soppily, it must be said — unable to cut the cord from the man she regards as the love of her life.

Criticised: Cheryl's latest tattoo, which she showed off at the National Television Awards, has been ridiculed by critics

Meanwhile, executives at Fox, who will be making The X Factor USA, appear to have fallen out of love with her. Cheryl never confirmed stories last year she’d signed a deal to join Simon Cowell as a judge on the American show. But at the time it was widely reported she was offered £3 million to join the line-up in what one commentator described as a ‘golden ticket to world superstardom’.

Certainly the job was mentioned to her by Cowell and executives from Fox. That much both sides will confirm off the record. Fox came to see her in action on the judging panel in the UK. They loved the way she and Cowell bantered and flirted and the expectation was that a contract would follow soon after.

Weeks turned into months, though, and nothing was made official. Yet Cheryl continued to make plans to relocate to America, to try to launch her music career there.

As recently as two weeks ago, Peter Rice, the head of entertainment at Fox, told a seminar of television critics in California: ‘If Cheryl was to be on the show, I think she’s proved she’s a terrific judge. She has wonderful chemistry with Simon.’ But he added: ‘I think Simon is still meeting and trying to find the right mixture.’

That turns out to be an ominous statement for Cheryl. It appears Cowell is keen to have her on the show in some capacity — but the American producers are unconvinced she is a big enough star to merit a place on the panel.

She may end up helping him to mentor his group, a role taken by Sinitta in the UK version. The feeling is that, while she is big in the UK, she is still a nobody in America. The show’s rival American Idol has Jennifer Lopez and Steve Tyler. Fox are keen to put their star power in the shade.

Cowell wanted Katy Perry, but she is too busy touring this year. I’m told he is also intrigued by the idea of getting someone genuinely iconic, like singer Diana Ross, to sit on the panel, possibly alongside a younger star such as former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger.

Speaking at the National Television Awards, he indicated the show needs to be ‘bigger and better’ than any other he has done, which does not augur well for Cheryl.
Cowell is supposedly doing ‘everything in his power’ to persuade U.S. bosses that Miss Cole is the right choice to sit alongside him.

However, one friend of Simon’s told me he is making the decision in his customary way — which is to leave it until the last moment and then go, quite ruthlessly, with his gut instinct. So far, the indications are that his instinct is not favouring her.

Reconciliation? It was reported over the weekend that Cheryl met up with her cheating ex-husband, footballer Ashley Cole

Reconciliation? It was reported over the weekend that Cheryl met up with her cheating ex-husband, footballer Ashley Cole

So with Ashley still a presence in her life, Cheryl will continue to carve a future for herself in Los Angeles, even without the help of either Simon Cowell or Derek Hough.
She already has a busy programme of promotional activity in America for her album launch there. She is also weighing up an offer from her friend Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas to appear as a judge on a TV show searching for an ‘urban’ performer.

This is welcome, as she would like to have more musical credibility. Somewhat predictably, she’s up for Worst Album and Least Stylish at the NME awards. Her supporters point out she has two Brit Award nominations, so why should she care?
But care she clearly does.

The bondage-style £2,200 Versace dress she poured herself into for last week’s awards shows off the handiwork of Mark Mahoney of the Shamrock Social Club tattoo studio in Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles.

Mahoney, who has also worked on David Beckham, spent 11 hours on the butterfly-based design descending down her back. It was done last August, as she holidayed in the city while recovering from malaria.

It’s said to symbolise growth and renewal. You can’t blame her for wanting a fresh start — but to have it emblazoned so permanently is an odd decision.
But then Cheryl is a curious mixture of hard confidence and insecurity, particularly when it comes to her appearance.

Although she loves fashion and calls it a ‘massive’ part of who she is, she has not enjoyed being elevated to the status of fashion icon. She told Elle magazine this year that she ‘couldn’t care less’ what the world thinks of her style. ‘If they like it, they like it.’

She added: ‘There’s only so much you can cope with and then you either allow it to swallow you up or you say: “Sod this.” I have had it with negativity and bitchiness.
‘I want people to like my music, but I couldn’t give a **** about what they think of me.’

Brave words of defiance. Indeed, Cheryl sounds very much like a young woman who — rightly or wrongly — is steeling herself for the probability of a big public rejection.

It remains to be seen whether meeting her ex-husband is another sign of her insecurity.

Chelsy Davy goes jogging as it is revealed she is expected to be Harry's wedding date

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 3:30 PM on 30th January 2011

It was revealed today that she is expected to return to the UK in time for the Royal Wedding in April.

And it looks like Chelsy Davy is wasting no time ensuring she looks her very best for her reunion with ex-boyfriend Prince Harry.

The 25-year-old was spotted working up a sweat during a beach front run in Cape Town.

Looking toned and trim, the Zimbabwe-born beauty pounded the pavement in a tiny pair of jogging shorts and a white vest.

She listened to music on an iPod Shuffle and, despite looking a little flushed in the cheeks, she still managed to retain an air of glamour with perfectly polished nails and jewellery.

The Mail On Sunday's Katie Nicholl revealed today that friends of Chelsy's are expecting her to attend the April 29 nuptials as Harry's date.

She is currently on a gap year after completing her post-graduate law studies and has spent the last six months travelling around Africa.

‘Chelsy has had a great six months out but she only intended to have a year off from her legal training and then she plans to move back to London, where she has a flat in Belgravia,’ said a chum.

‘She still has a job offer at lawyers Allen & Overy and plans to start there in September.’

Brainy Chelsy was offered a post at the law firm last year after completing her legal practice course, but she put the job on hold to go travelling.

After trekking around Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mauritius, Chelsy hopes to visit Australia next, but after that she will return to the UK to focus on building her career.

‘If she’s back in the UK the chances are she will be back with Harry,’ added another friend. ‘They are still fond of each other and are always leaving sweet messages for each other on Facebook.’

Meanwhile, a mole reports that Chelsy has been spending most of her time with her friend and former flatmate Alayne Moseley.

‘There’s talk that they are together,’ said the source.

‘But if anything Alayne is a stop-gap. Chelsy’s real love is Harry, who’s desperately missed her while she’s been travelling. We have never ruled out a reconciliation.’

Disney has finally made Tangled, a film about Rapunzel, after a decade of bad hair days!

By Lina Das
Last updated at 10:02 AM on 28th January 2011

Having taken Disney almost 70 years to get there, Tangled realises the studio’s long-held ambition to bring the legend of Rapunzel to the big screen.

The story of the girl with unfeasibly long hair who is locked in a tower until a prince comes to rescue her was first published in 1812 by the Brothers Grimm, but in Tangled, the animators have given the tale a contemporary twist. Our modern Rapunzel is a feisty girl who gives short shrift to Flynn Ryder, the charming male hero Who crosses the threshold of her tower one fateful day.

Given that the tale of Rapunzel is so engrained in our consciousness, much has been made of the decision to call the film Tangled — a move which many saw as a marketing ploy to encourage more boys to see the film.

But as Roy Conli, the film’s producer insists: ‘You can’t name your film until you know what the story is and as we built the story up, it became more and more apparent that we had two protagonists in the form of Rapunzel and Flynn, rather than just one, hence the movie’s broader title.’

It is Disney’s 50th animated feature and as Byron Howard and Nathan Greno, the film’s co-directors admit: ‘There was a huge responsibility in making it because if they’re done right, Disney films live for ever.’

Their biggest challenge was Rapunzel’s defining feature — hair is notoriously difficult to animate and because it is so central to the story, technology had to be improved.

‘The technicians were saying: “It would be easier if Rapunzel’s hair was never touched, never got wet, never brushed her shoulders and if we don’t have any characters with curly hair,”’ says Nathan Greno, ‘so, of course, we asked for all the above.’

The British Film Institute is screening all 50 films during the course of the year and with the quality of features such as Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs, Bambi and Sleeping Beauty, to live up to, Tangled was under considerable pressure.

Happily for its creators, U.S. critics hailed it a success when it was released there last year and it has already taken nearly £250 million at the box office. It is also the most expensive animated film ever made, costing £163 million.

THE CHARACTERS

Rapunzel (voiced by Mandy Moore)

Rapunzel is the tenth official princess of the Disney franchise (and the first to be computer-generated rather than hand drawn).

The film-makers were adamant that she shouldn’t be ‘princessy and aloof’ and to that end, ‘we looked at actresses such as Reese Witherspoon, Natalie Portman and Amy Poehler from the comedy series Saturday Night Live,’ says Clay Kaytis, one of the film’s animators. ‘We wanted unexpected, quirky qualities to shake up expectations of what a princess should be.’ They came up with nine versions of Rapunzel (five of which were fully animated) before they settled on the final one.

Flynn Ryder (Zachary Levi)

Though one might assume that Flynn was named in homage to the swashbuckling movie star Errol Flynn, Mark Kennedy, the film’s head of story, insists: ‘Unlike the Errol Flynn characters who were so cool they never really worried about anything, our Flynn is more like Indiana Jones, who’s always getting into trouble. Another influence was Bruce Willis in Die Hard. We didn’t want James Bond insouciance.’

Mother Gothel (Donna Murphy)

Having kidnapped Rapunzel as a baby, elderly witch Gothel uses the restorative powers of her hair to maintain her youthful looks.

There’s no delicate way to say this, but the villain of the piece is pretty sexy. ‘We didn’t do it deliberately,’ insists Clay Kaytis, ‘but because her whole thing is about trying to stay young, we wanted to create this beautiful kind of cougar character. We looked at Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard and Hollywood divas such as Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. Mother Gothel is very much of that ilk.’

Gothel is undoubtedly one of Disney’s most deliciously awful villains, and many of her finer lines were put together after film-makers asked female colleagues about their relationships with their mothers. ‘We got these stories about how their mothers would come out with awful put-downs, even though they had their daughters’ best interests at heart,’ says Nathan Greno. ‘It’s funny because that stuff goes way over kids’ heads, but adults love it.’

THE HAIR

It took ten years of playing around with computer graphics technology before film-makers felt prepared enough to commit Rapunzel to the big screen, ‘and even with less than a year to go before the film’s release, we weren’t entirely sure we could do this,’ says Byron Howard. ‘The hair is almost another character in the movie and we needed to do it justice.’

A real-life hair model was used to observe and then recreate the movement of Rapunzel’s flowing locks, while the effects team drilled a hole in an American football helmet and passed a huge bunch of thread through it before walking up and down to see how it felt to carry that weight on their heads.

Steve Goldberg, the film’s visual effects supervisor, says: ‘We also calculated that a foot of hair would weigh approximately 1lb and so Rapunzel’s hair, at around 70ft would have weighed about 70lb [5st]. Obviously, we couldn’t design her neck to realistically accommodate that weight of hair,’ he adds. ‘That wouldn’t have looked nice at all!’

THE BIG 5-0

As the 50th animated feature in the Walt Disney canon, the pressure was definitely on to create something special with Tangled. ‘Although we wanted to draw on Disney’s history, we also wanted to make something new and fresh,’ says Nathan Greno.

The animators looked to such Disney classics as Pinocchio (1940) and Cinderella (1950) for inspiration, but also to more modern movies such as 1989’s, The Little Mermaid.

Greno says: ‘A lot of the female characters up until The Little Mermaid were lovely but bland, but with Ariel, we saw something we’d never seen before — a real spark — and we tried to do a similar thing with Rapunzel.’

THE LASSETER EFFECT

In one of Tangled’s most memorable scenes, Rapunzel and Flynn are in a boat while thousands of floating lanterns are launched into the sky. It was a scene influenced by the experience of John Lasseter, director of Toy Story and Disney’s inspirational chief creative officer, after his wedding anniversary celebrations in Bora Bora.

He says: ‘My wife and I were having a meal when they brought out a lantern, made us write a note to each other, taped them to the lantern and said: “Now kiss and let the lantern go”. We watched it drift off for two hours and it just looked like a tiny, floating star.’

His animation team thought it would look ‘awesome’ in 3D, even though, technically, the scene was one of the most complex to film.

‘You know that Spencer Tracy quote about the job of actors being to learn their lines and not trip over the furniture?’ says Steve Goldberg. ‘Well, getting the lanterns to behave on screen was like getting 50,000 actors to avoid the furniture. It was a real technical achievement.’
