Folk awards celebrate family duo

Mother and daughter act Norma Waterson and Eliza Carthy have scooped two prizes at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

The duo won album of the year for Gift, their first joint record, picking up an extra prize for best traditional track.

Carthy accepted the award on behalf of her mother, who has been in intensive care for more than three months.

Eleven-piece band Bellowhead were also double award winners at the ceremony in central London, taking home prizes for best group and best live act.

As previously announced, Glasgow-born singer-songwriter Donovan received a lifetime achievement award.

The 64-year-old said he was "honoured" to get the accolade, having been "fired with the mission to bring Celtic music back to popular culture".

Chris Wood was named folk singer of the year, while his track Hollow Point won best original song.

The Who front man Roger Daltrey presented the musician of the year award to Andy Cutting, a prize he previously won in 2008.

Married couple Nancy Kerr and James Fagan were presented the best duo prize, while the Levellers were the recipients of the Roots award.

Elsewhere the good tradition award went to Port Isaac's Fisherman's Friends in recognition of their contribution to traditional folk music.

The singing Cornish fisherman signed a record deal last March, with their first album of sea shanties made the UK album chart Top 10 a month later.

Trio Moore/Moss/Rutter were awarded the Young Folk award, the result of Radio 2's annual search for the most promising young folk artist in the UK.

Laura Marling and Bellowhead were among the performers at the event, broadcast live on Radio 2.

The Fighter: The bruise brothers: Wahlberg's good, but Bale's better in a boxing film that punches above its weight

By Chris Tookey
Last updated at 8:57 PM on 6th February 2011

Verdict: No knockout but a winner on points

Rating: 4 Star Rating

The Fighter is two movies for the price of one. The first is a real-life Rocky, as lovable lug Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg) starts out as a dim-witted loser but becomes a champ thanks to his marginally brighter girlfriend — that’s the usually sweet Amy Adams, valiantly playing against type as a foul-mouthed working-class barmaid with tattoos and denim hot pants.

It’s also a shouty, working-class family drama — think EastEnders, with more smoking, gallons of hair lacquer and enough leopard-skin on the women to clothe a tribe of Zulu warriors.

In order for Micky to triumph as an individual in the ring, he first has to take on his spectacularly dysfunctional family outside it — notably seven tough sisters, all seemingly unmarried, jobless and spoiling for a fight, his ferocious manager-mother (Melissa Leo) and his unreliable trainer-brother Dicky (Christian Bale).

Not quite a knockout: Despite fine performances from Wahlberg and Bale, the film is punching a little above its weight

Of these characters, the most colourful is Dicky, a one-time championship contender who sent Sugar Ray Leonard to the canvas and became a local legend.

Unfortunately, failure has gone to his head and he’s become an emaciated, wild-eyed crack addict who’s not much use to himself, let alone his brother.

Dicky’s being followed around by a camera crew, who he thinks are interested in him because he’s planning a comeback but actually want to record the decline and fall of a drug addict.

Bale steals the movie with a mesmerisingly goofy performance. It could easily be dismissed as a brazen attempt to win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, except that we get a glimpse of the real Dicky during the end credits, and he’s just as much of a show-off.

Bale has already won a Golden Globe and is rightly favourite to repeat the feat at the Oscars.

I was not quite as impressed by Melissa Leo, who’s been Oscar-nominated for her supporting performance, along with Amy Adams. Leo’s let-it-all-hang-out, domineering matriarch is functional but too much on one note, and not nearly as subtle or nuanced as, say, Helena Bonham Carter in The King’s Speech.

The biggest weakness, artistically and commercially, is that Micky is one of the least interesting characters.

Wahlberg plays him very well and convinces as a professional boxer, but Micky’s so passive and — let’s face it — dumb that you watch everyone else on screen before your attention gets drawn, reluctantly, back to him.

Another flaw is that director David O. Russell isn’t great on action. Compare the fight sequences with Scorsese’s Raging Bull or even John G. Avildsen’s Rocky, and they’re only workmanlike. Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan) was at one point scheduled to direct, and he would have given the boxing much more visceral impact.

The film convinces most outside the ring, and is commendably unsentimental. These are not nice people, and Russell doesn’t try to pretend they are. But you do end up rooting for them. There are no big surprises. We probably didn’t need to be told that being a crackhead is not a great lifestyle choice, or that you need resilience to succeed. But there’s no denying that this movie works as a crowd-pleaser.

The shock lies in how hefty a punch so simple a story can still deliver.

Phantom sequel leads Olivier nods

Phantom of the Opera sequel Love Never Dies leads the way at the Laurence Olivier awards with seven nominations.

The Andrew Lloyd Webber show is up for best new musical, while its stars Ramin Karimloo, Sierra Boggess and Summer Strallen are in line for acting prizes.

The National's revival of Terence Rattigan's After the Dance has six nods, while the Donmar's King Lear and the musical Legally Blonde have five.

The awards will be held at London's Theatre Royal Drury Lane on 13 March.

Love Never Dies, which received mixed reviews when it opened in March last year, is also nominated for best lighting, set and costume design.

Its nominations follow a four-day closure in November, during which some changes were made to the show.

Love Never Dies and Legally Blonde will compete against Fela! and Love Story for the best new musical honour.

Legally Blonde star Sheridan Smith, previously seen in BBC sitcom Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, is up for best actress in a musical, as is Love Story's Emma Williams.

In the best actor category, David Suchet's performance in All My Sons is nominated alongside Roger Allam's in Henry IV Parts 1 & 2.

Derek Jacobi's King Lear and Rory Kinnear's Hamlet are also cited, as is Mark Rylance - winner of the award last year for Jerusalem - for his work in La Bete.

Tamsin Greig and Sophie Thompson are up for the best actress prize for their roles in The Little Dog Laughed and Clybourne Park respectively.

Tracie Bennett is also shortlisted for playing Judy Garland in End of the Rainbow, as is Nancy Carroll for After the Dance.

End of the Rainbow, The Little Dog Laughed and Clybourne Park are all up for the best new play award.

The National Theatre scored the most nominations for its productions - 17 in all - while the Royal Court and Donmar have nine each.

There will be live coverage of this year's awards ceremony on BBC Radio 2 and on TV via the BBC Red Button.

Last year's awards saw Rachel Weisz honoured for her performance in A Streetcar Named Desire and Katori Hall's The Mountaintop named best new play.

Black Eyed Peas to play Wireless

US pop act Black Eyed Peas will be the Friday night headliners at this year's Wireless festival in London's Hyde Park, organisers have announced.

The hip-hop collective, who performed at Sunday's Super Bowl in Texas, will perform on 1 July.

Dance duo the Chemical Brothers will headline the festival's second night the following evening.

Last year it was revealed that Britpop band Pulp would be reforming and would be the highlight of Sunday's line-up.

Organisers said Wireless would be Black Eyed Peas' only UK festival appearance.

The quartet, led by producer will.i.am, will be joined on the bill by British acts Tinie Tempah, Plan B and Example.

Support acts for the Saturday show include Janelle Monae, Chase & Status and Aphex Twin.

Further acts for the festival's final night have yet to be announced.
