Verdict: Art-house horror at its most pretentious
Rating:
The Silent House is a Uruguayan horror film that promises ‘real fear in real time’.
That’s because most of the film is one continuous take as a young woman (Florencia Colucci) finds herself trapped inside a house that becomes increasingly gruesome and terrifying.
For as long as director Gustavo Hernandez keeps the movie realistic, this is a frightening experience. It’s a pleasant change to have a horror film that builds up suspense and doesn’t rely on frenetic editing.
Frightening but a failure: The film shows much promise but the ending leaves viewers feeling cheated
However, it’s astonishing that she doesn’t make more of an effort to escape early on; and The Silent House collapses altogether in its final half-hour, where it becomes obvious that we are not being given an objective vision of reality.
The plot stops making any sense and the twist ending leaves far too many details unexplained.
An American remake is imminent, but the faults are inherent in the pretentious concept, which leaves the audience feeling not so much chilled as cheated.
