Armadillo, review: Fly-on-the-wall documentary captures boredom of war

Verdict: Overpraised doc about Afghanistan

Rating: 2 Star Rating

Armadillo is a glib, superficial, fly-on-the-wall documentary about Danish soldiers serving in Afghanistan. It’s quite tedious for much of its length, but it certainly captures the boredom of waiting around and sharing an uncomfortable lifestyle with people you’d rather not spend time with.

The film livens up towards the end and finds a reason to exist, when the soldiers are ambushed and — rather than take any prisoners — decide to kill the handful of Taliban fighters who have just tried to massacre them.

Too tedious: Audiences should look elsewhere for a thoughtful documentary about Afghanistan

I think we’re meant to worry about the extent to which war has dehumanised the young Danish soldiers, which may commend the movie to pacifists and won it a prize at Cannes, but I suspect most people will secretly feel that the Taliban get just about what they deserve.

As for a thoughtful documentary about why we’re in Afghanistan and what we hope to achieve there, I’m still waiting.
