Fans looking forward to seeing Liam Neeson's comedic turn in The Hangover: Part 2 will be disappointed to hear that the actor has been cut from the highly-anticipated sequel.

Neeson filmed his brief appearance as a Bangkok tattoo artist last year during initial shoots, but his scenes have now been scrapped.

The 58-year-old was needed to re-shoot some of the scenes to include extra information, but was unable to fit them in to his schedule as he is currently in London filming Clash Of The Titans 2.

He has been replaced with actor/director Nick Cassavetes.

The cameo role was originally going to be played by Mel Gibson, but Neeson was brought in last October after cast and crew, understood to be led by star Zach Galifianakis, protested the controversial actor's hiring.

Director Tod Phillips said at the time: 'I thought Mel would have been great in the movie and I had the full backing of Jeff Robinov and his team.

'But I realise filmmaking is a collaborative effort, and this decision ultimately did not have the full support of my entire cast and crew.'

Neeson previously worked with one of the star's Bradley Cooper in The A-Team.

With the film's release just over a month away, Phillips was forced to scrap Neeson entirely from the film and re-shoot the scenes.

Nick Cassavetes directed The Notebook and My Sister's Keeper, and is currently planning the mobster biopic about John Gotti, starring John Travolta.

He is also an actor and appeared in several films including Face/Off.

Third time's the charm: Actor/director Nick Cassavetes (left) replaces Neeson, who stepped in when cast and crew protested Mel Gibson's initial hiring

'We were in a complete time crunch so I called up Nick and asked if he would do the part,' Phillips told Variety.

'He came in and crushed it and that is the scene that you will ultimately see in the film. [I'm excited for everyone] to see the film. It turned out great.'
