So You Think You Can Dance hits ratings low in hot weather

The BBC1 dance series, hosted by Cat Deeley, only attracted 3.7million viewers at its peak - a drop of almost two million on last year.

The show - featuring judges Arlene Phillips, Louise Redknapp and Nigel Lythgoe - lagged behind ITV1's New You've Been Framed! which nabbed 3.9million viewers.

A BBC source said more viewers would tune in as the series progresses.

He added: "The last series went out in January so it was cold dark nights versus lovely sunshine now.

"You can't compare like for like. This is a bigger, longer-running series."

Meanwhile, as the top 20 finalists were revealed, it emerged one hopeful has already had a taste of fame on Britain's Got Talent.

Bethany Rose Harrison, 20, from Devon, reached the semi-finals of the rival ITV1 series last year with the raunchy Ruby Girls.

But Simon Cowell branded them "too cabaret".

The ten boys and ten girls in the final will be challenged to learn new dance techniques for a chance of performing in Hollywood and landing £50,000.

The live shows kick off on Saturday.
