Funnyman Russell Brand has appeared on American Idol - as a 'charisma coach'

The Brit, 35, hubby of US singer Katy Perry, drew on his role as a rock star in the film Forgetting Sarah Marshall to offer contestants on the talent show advice.

Long-haired Russell, pictured above with wannabes Jacob Lusk and James Durbin, told them: "I've come here to talk to you about performance, stage presence, exercise regime, hair..."

When asked how to be sexy on stage, the comic's reply was: "Take your top off."

BEEB bosses pulled a dramatisation of steamy 1950s novel Room At The Top following a rights row.

The adaptation, starring Silk's Maxine Peake, was due to be screened on BBC4 on Thursday night.

But cautious BBC bosses put the broadcast on ice while they look into a "potential contractual issue" over the screen rights.

BBC4 showed a repeat of erotic costume drama Fanny Hill instead.
