The troubled actress - who is currently on probation for a 2007 driving under the influence conviction - must now appear at a Los Angeles court later today to enter a plea after being formally accused of stealing the jewellery from a shop in California last month.
The decision comes just five weeks after the actress was released from court-ordered drug rehabilitation.
The 24-year-old faces up to three years in jail if she's found guilty of grabbing the jewellery, which was handed over to police by one of her associates last week, just before a planned raid on her home in Venice.
Lindsay maintains the one-of-a-kind gem was given to her on loan.
In a statement earlier this week, Lindsay's solicitor Shawn Chapman Holley said: "We vehemently deny these allegations, and if charges are filed we will fight them in court."
The Mean Girls star has grabbed more headlines for her misdemeanours than her work on the big screen in recent years.
In 2007 she was convicted for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Lindsay has been to rehab five times and served two sentences in jail after breaking the terms of her DUI probation.
