Undecided: Sian Williams has worked in the North West before but is said to be concerned about the impact on her family
BBC Breakfast presenter Sian Williams is still undecided about moving to Salford but may opt for temporary switch to help re-launch the show from its new base near Manchester.
Most bosses expect her to quit over the move but there are still desperate attempts to make the switch to the new base as attractive as possible, with rumours that the BBC wants her to do a six-month stint before leaving the role.
Senior corporation insiders have denied suggestions she has been offered a role as the ‘number one stand-in’ for all the major BBC1 bulletins if she decided to stay in London.
It is understood that only a handful of the show’s 100 staff have actually agreed to join the relocation as of yet and it is expected that by the end of March when they have to decide if they are going less than 50 per cent will have signed up for it.
There are rumours at the BBC that Miss Williams, 46, may be given a political presenting role if she does decide to exit ahead of the 2012 move.
The BBC is understood to be keen to keep her even if she leaves the breakfast show and she is valued as a political interviewer, according to corporation news sources.
There is also the possibility of more work on Radio 4 after she recently stood in for Libby Purves on the station’s Midweek programme.
This comes amid growing controversy of the BBC project to move major shows out of London to Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the English regions.
It has emerged that David Dimbleby has still not signed a new deal with the BBC after he threatened to quit over plans to move the production team for Question Time to Glasgow.
Opponents of the move of the politics show are now hoping the BBC’s new chairman Lord Patten will step in and overturn the decision.
On BBC Breakfast, the other main presenters – Bill Turnbull, Susanna Reid and Charlie Stayt – have yet to declare their intentions, but it is understood that they are more than likely to make the switch.
A BBC News colleague said of Miss Williams’ situation : ‘The management view seems to be that it may be too complicated for her life.’
But the source said the wrench of giving up one of the biggest news jobs at the BBC was making the decision so difficult for Miss Williams.
Last year Miss Williams revealed that her future on the programme will be ‘based around what’s best for my family’.
Miss Williams had said: ‘I spent five years living and working as a journalist in the North West, I know how good the quality of life is in the region. I have four children to consider in this though - one of whom is likely to be in the middle of A-levels during the move. My father, recently widowed, lives in the South East.’
She said while she had ‘got on her bike’ before for work and would do so again, she had to consider her family situation.
