A Little Bit Of Heaven is a grotesque example of Hollywood schmaltz in which Kate Hudson poses and preens as a young woman finding love with a good-looking doctor (a hapless Gael Garcia Bernal) as she dies, picturesquely, of colonic cancer.
Throw in an unspeakable script, sluggish direction by Nicole Kassell, an unbearably smug performance by Whoopi Goldberg as, would you believe, God, and more attempted laughter-through-the-tears moments than there were in Love Story, and this is about as morbid and schlocky a romcom as you can imagine.
At one point, a senior consultant comes in, gazes solemnly at Ms Hudson and says: ‘There has been no improvement.’ In view of the unrelenting ghastliness of her performance, that is an understatement.
